Coffee dehydrates the body ?

If you believe everything you´re told, even this outrageous claim would be believable. Even though coffee is brewed using water, some people still claim that coffee and other caffeinated beverages will make you dehydrated. Could this be true?

The effect coffee has on the body´s waste management system is indisputable, caffeine being an accelerator of the kidneys. This makes the kidneys expel excess sodium and water through urine. So if you´re worried that you´re going to get dehydrated constantly having to urinate, you can relax. The amount of urine is not an indicator of how hydrated the body is.

Kaffe er tross alt ca 90% vann

As explained in the words of Dr. Daniel Vigil,  professor at David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles. “When you drink a cup of coffee or you drink a glass of iced tea, you are necessarily taking in a volume of fluid along with that dose of [caffeine],” Vigil says. Even though caffeine is a mild diuretic, Vigil says, you won’t lose more fluid through urine than you take in by drinking a caffeinated beverage. Your body is able to absorb as much fluid as it needs and expel the rest, he says.

So if your coffee makes you feel dehydrated, or anyone is using this as an excuse to cut down on their coffee drinking, you now know better! If you are having symptoms, like headaches, sleep deprevation, anxiety, this might actually have a medical explanation. Some people are born with a caffeine sensitivity. Try switching to darker roasts or decaffeinated coffee, if you´re troubled.
